There was a capacity crowd in DkIT on Saturday for the annual St. Vincent’s School Fashionably Talented Show which has become a calendar highlight for students and families alike. Featuring an incredible variety of talent and creativity, the show featured class acts from first and second years, individual talent acts that included singer-songwriters, gymnastic displays and instrumental accompaniments along with a stunning visual display of costumes designed and created by Transition Year students.
Pat O’Shaughnessy compered the show and commended the TY girls on their professionalism and dedication, explaining that the event is predominantly organised and managed by a team under the guidance of Business teachers Ultan Henry, Vicky Muckian and James Doyle, giving them invaluable knowledge and experience. The judging panel featured familiar faces from the world of fashion, musical theatre, choreography and social media. Caroline McElroy, Therese Dunne, Ciara Lennon and Niamh McKeever had the unenviable task of picking winners in both the talent and fashion shows.
As the night came to a close there was enormous tension and excitement, particularly backstage in the green room as hundreds of students waited on the results with bated breath. First year student Rowan Murphy took top prize in the Individual Act with her show-stopping performance from the musical Wicked, while second year Naoise Duffy took second place with a song she penned herself ‘as gaeilge’ which tackled the very current issue of cyber-bullying. 2 Connolly took first place with their hugely energetic dance routine in the Second Year Category dancing to a medley of Queen hits, while 2 Pearse took second prize. In a keenly fought competition among the First year class acts, 1 Grainne won with a fabulous routine from last year’s musical sensation The Greatest Showman. 1 Emer took second place with their act which featured different musical genres and dance styles from the last 100 years.
The second half of the show is of course all about fashion and featured thirty-six creations which Transition Years have been working tirelessly to complete since September, under the tutelage of their Art teachers Carmel Clyne, Caoimhe woods and Leanne Mullen. The much coveted top prize went to the wonderful ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’ which was created using hundreds of pages from old books and modelled by Yasmine Abbas, while second place went to the beautiful ‘Blume’ modelled by the very elegant Silvia Ekedigwe.
Without a doubt the highlight of the show each year is the Teacher Act and this year did not disappoint as a few brave members of staff took to the stage to give an impressive display of dance moves with a little stand-up comedy thrown in for good measure. Principal Deirdre Matthews wrapped up proceedings by thanking all those involved for helping to ensure the show was a huge success.
