St Vincent’s Secondary School has once again proved that it is ahead of the game when it comes to ICT matters. They are delighted to announce that they have been selected by Google out of hundreds of applicants to receive a grant for European Code Week. All 1st years and Transition Year students currently study coding in St Vincent’s. 1st years learn the basics of programming with Scratch, how to solve coding tasks and challenges as well as how to make games. Transition Year students learn the formal way to write code by learning HTML and CSS languages as well as an introduction to Python.

As part of Europe Code Week St Vincent’s Secondary School will be offering extra coding workshops to students in the school but also to many primary schools in the area.

Students from 4th, 5th and 6th class in local primary schools are being offered the opportunity to visit St Vincent’s to take part in a workshop where they will learn the basics of scratch, coding with Sphero, Lego and Kajo robots, how to programme a BBC microbit and complete a mini physical computing project. They will make items such as a step counter, a fitness beep tester, a food temperature sensor, a dimmer switch or a compass.

Europe Code Week takes place from 7th – 22nd October and to register primary schools should fill in the Codathon survey on the school website www.stv.ie/survey/ or email lmccusker@stv.ie. Spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

More details on Europe Code Week are available at http://codeweek.eu.
